The Power of Accountability: Building Habits That Last at Cumorah Academy

“When every physical and mental resource is focused, one’s power to solve a problem multiplies tremendously.”
— Norman Vincent Peale

At Cumorah Academy, we believe in more than just academic learning. We believe in growth, discipline, and transformation. One of the most effective tools we use to build lasting character and inner strength in our students is the power of accountability.

Each semester, students participate in what we call the Accountability Challenge. It’s a four-week commitment that pushes them to set personal goals, take consistent action, and stay committed with the help of peer support. It may seem simple, but the results are profound.

The Power of Accountability in Shaping Your Future

So, what is the Accountability Challenge?
At Cumorah Academy, every student takes on the Accountability Challenge—a four-week journey of discipline and personal growth. It begins with each student setting three specific, measurable weekly goals. As the weeks progress, these goals grow in complexity and ambition.

Students are required to define:

  • What they want to accomplish
  • How do they plan to do it
  • When will they complete it

To stay on track, students check in with their accountability partner every day before 11:50 a.m. via message, reporting on their progress. Missing a check-in counts as a missed goal and is marked with a red cross. But it’s more than just a personal loss—each miss affects their student house, bringing consequences for the whole team.

This is where the House Coup, a friendly but motivating competition among student houses, comes into play. Students earn points for their house through personal and group activities, including their performance in the Accountability Challenge. Success becomes a shared responsibility, just like in life.

The results?
Students discover the power of consistency. They learn that true growth doesn’t come from short bursts of motivation, but from the small, repeated choice to follow through, day after day.

From Frustration to Breakthrough: Student Stories on the Power of Accountability

For some students, it’s their first time working with an accountability partner. They are starting a new reality as they embrace the benefits of accountability and commitment. The point of this challenge is to inspire students to take ownership of their lives and act immediately.

Having someone hold you accountable will make sure you keep motivated and identify areas for improvement. Some students shared their insights on this experience and the lessons they learned:

Nathalia from Colombia shared her experience:
“At the beginning, it was easy because my goals were simple. But as time passed, they became more specific, and managing my homework and responsibilities became harder. It taught me so much about time management and setting priorities.”

Lehi from Spain also found the challenge demanding:
“It was very hard for me. Setting goals takes time and intentionality. But with God’s help, I learned the power of being accountable to myself.”

And Maressa from Brazil had to overcome forgetfulness to succeed:
“To be honest, I struggled at first because I used to forget. Then I started setting alarms and reminders. That helped me build the habit.”

Their stories are just a few among many. These challenges go far beyond academics. They prepare students to live with integrity, responsibility, and vision.

Why Accountability Matters for a Purpose-Driven Life

We often ask our students:
What would happen if you improved just 1% every day?

Think about that. Over a year, those tiny improvements would lead to life-altering changes. That’s the beauty of accountability—it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

At Cumorah Academy, our mission is to prepare students to live lives they’re proud of. That’s why we prioritize activities like the Accountability Challenge. It’s not just an assignment. It’s a simulation of real life—a practice ground for building discipline, time management, and self-leadership.

Accountability is a skill that translates into every area of life:

  • It helps you meet deadlines at work.
  • It empowers you to keep commitments in relationships.
  • It builds confidence in your ability to follow through on dreams and goals.

It’s one of the most valuable soft skills you can develop—and one that many people overlook. But not here.
