Commitment, Love, and Passion
The Spring Semester has begun and we have a new Advisory Couple! Brigg and Janet Steele have joined us for a semester full of surprises, learning, and more. They have passion, love, and commitment to our program and students. The Steele kindly shared their story and enthusiasm for this new journey. They are more than capable of dealing with this new responsibility.
A Life of Commitment
Brigg and Janet are committed to their goals. Brigg graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Education. He worked as a teacher and worked for twenty years in computer sales. He also owned a caregiver company. Janet also graduated from BYU with a degree in Business and graduated in law school at BYU. She was one of the top 5% of her class. The couple spent five years together in China teaching in college.
Needless to say, they commit to joining our program and expanding our student’s vision of their future. We mentioned in previous articles that students are to design a Life Vision for their lives. In this assignment, they are to envision their future selves in the next 5 or 10 years ahead. Having that final picture in mind, they scribble their roadmap to attain this vision. Aware of youth challenges, Brigg and Janet are willing to support students to attain this vision. The Steeles have plenty of experience dealing with youth. They have five children and 21 grandchildren.
The couple has important responsibilities on campus. They teach Finance Classes and are in charge of Sunday meetings, but most importantly they support students in their Life Vision. “Our main job is to meet with students at least six times per semester. We are to help them to put their life vision together,” says the couple. Surely, they will give support in other unexpected events, including workshops and small events on campus.
A Little About Their Lives
Surely, Brigg and Janet Steele have many interests and hobbies. “We love reading, going for walks, gardening, and traveling,” they say. Also, their grandchildren are an important part of their lives. “We love spending time with them, especially doing a pool party in the backyard.” The couple also have a fascinating love story.
Janet and Brigg have known each other since they were children. “I always said I would marry him!” says Janet. Brigg, on the other hand, had a girlfriend during the high school years. However, shortly after Brigg went on a religious mission in the state of Oklahoma, his then-girlfriend married another man. “When I came home, my sister said: ‘Don’t worry. Janet’s in love with you,’” says Brigg. Janet’s endurance paid off later. They married in the Prove temple and are happily married ever since.
Hope in Youth and God
The Steeles are aware of the thorns and challenges of the world today. They are aware of the mind-numbing trials young adults are facing. Nevertheless, they have hope in our students and their capacity to do good. They are already impressed by the skills our students are learning and showing. “Their ability to love and make friends is something I have been so impressed with. We’ve only been here a week and some
of them are friends forever. That kind of amazed me that they were able to get to that so quick,” shares Brigg. Janet was impressed with the student’s commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So many of them have dedicated their lives to living the gospel. I’m so impressed to see people their age so committed to consecrating their lives to God,” says Janet.
Truly, these young people are different. They are willing to learn, grow, progress, lead, and teach. Cumorah Academy’s commitment is to expand what they already have within. Our students came from different backgrounds with a sleepy fire hidden, only awaiting the right sparkle to shine. And Brigg and Janet will be vital to raise this fire in them!
