Compassion-Driven Education: How Cumorah Academy Students Brought Warmth to a Cold Season

December 3, 2025  •  Author: marketing

As fall settled over Central Europe this year, the fall season quickly revealed its defining characteristics: biting cold, early sunsets, and the first heavy blankets of snow. For anyone who has watched a classic Christmas movie, the imagery feels familiar—glowing lights, cozy houses, warm gatherings, and festive meals shared with the people who matter most.

  • Families and friends gathering together with laughter filling the room.
  • Children tearing open the gifts they’ve been waiting for all year.
  • A table set with dishes crafted from beloved traditions.
  • Moments that become memories—cherished, joyful, and full of hope.

But the reality behind this postcard-perfect season is not the same for everyone.

While some celebrate, many families quietly face the year’s harshest challenges.

Cold weather makes daily life heavier. Food becomes harder to gather, store, and stretch. Heating bills rise. And the pressure of a holiday—meant to uplift and unite—often becomes a reminder of what is missing.

This contrast, between abundance and need, is what inspired an outreach initiative at Cumorah Academy—one that reflects the very heart of compassion-driven education.

Building a Habit of Service Through Compassion-Driven Education

In many European countries, December carries a particularly sharp cold. Snowfall becomes a regular companion, covering streets, rooftops, and fields with its bright yet unforgiving presence. In these moments, the difference between comfort and hardship grows even more visible.

Food banks across the continent play a vital role during this time, offering hope to families whose basic needs are not consistently met. And it is here—in one of these food banks in Protaninova, Czech Republic—that a group of Cumorah Academy students chose to make a meaningful difference.

Their goal was simple but powerful: to transform their classroom learning into compassionate, hands-on service. This is what compassion-driven education looks like in action—not abstract principles, but real service, real empathy, real impact.

Students spent the day sorting, organizing, and preparing food donations generously given by restaurants and organizations. Bags of produce, pantry staples, and prepared meals passed through their hands with one purpose: to lighten someone else’s burden.

This project became more than a volunteer assignment. It became a living lesson on leadership, empathy, and the responsibility to lift others—a lesson rooted in faith and grounded in genuine love for neighbors.

Voices of Impact: Students Reflect on Compassion-Driven Education

“I can serve as Jesus served.” — Eric Pastore, Brazil

For Eric, the food bank project didn’t just represent service; it represented identity.
“I can serve as Jesus served. At Cumorah Academy, we are learning a lot to be a leader like Jesus Christ.”

His words reflect the foundation of compassion-driven education—the belief that leadership begins in the heart, expressed through actions that mirror Christ’s example of humility and love. At Cumorah Academy, students don’t just study leadership principles—they practice them.

“We’re here to apply everything we learn.” — Dallin Romero, Peru

Dallin shared how meaningful it felt to experience the teachings of Cumorah Academy in a real-world setting.
We are here to practice and apply everything we learn,” he said. “This project helps us be more empathetic to others. We need to help others.”

The classroom gives students knowledge.
Service gives them purpose.
Together, these two pillars create the essence of compassion-driven education.

“We’re making a difference.” — Juan Diego Bernaola, Peru

For Juan Diego, gratitude shaped his entire experience.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity where we can organize food and try to bring more food to the community,” he said. “Why is this important? It’s because we are making a difference.”

His reflection captures what Cumorah Academy aims to instill: a mindset of positive action. Students learn that service is not measured by size, but by sincerity. Every hour given, every bag packed, every box delivered—each one matters.

Why Compassion-Driven Education Matters More Than Ever

Service has always been a central part of Cumorah Academy’s mission. However, in today’s world—where communities face increasing financial pressure, loneliness, displacement, and uncertainty—service assumes a deeper importance.

Here’s why compassion-driven education is transforming students and the communities they touch:

1. It Builds Character, Not Just Skills

Technical skills help students succeed professionally.
Compassion helps them succeed as human beings.

A leader who cares can inspire.
A leader who serves can transform.

2. It Connects Students With Real Needs

Understanding a challenge is one thing.
Standing inside of it—packing food for someone who will go without dinner unless you do—is something else.

This kind of learning shapes perspective. It develops maturity. It replaces judgment with empathy.

3. It Turns Faith Into Action

For many students, service is a way to express their testimony.
It’s how they follow Christ’s teachings.
It’s how they practice becoming more like Him.

4. It Strengthens Communities

When students serve, families eat.
When students show up, others feel seen.
And when our students act, neighborhoods change.

5. It Creates Leaders the World Actually Needs

The world doesn’t only need leaders who are talented.
It needs leaders who are kind.
Leaders who see and leaders who act.

This is the leadership Cumorah Academy is intentionally shaping through compassion-driven education.

A Season of Snow, A Season of Service

While the fall months may be cold, the hearts of students who served in Protaninova were anything but.

The food they packed will fill pantries. The hours they contributed will lift families. And the example they set will continue to echo across campus long after the last snowflake of the season falls.

Their service project wasn’t just an event.
It was a statement—a declaration that compassion matters, that learning and service are intertwined, and that small acts can lead to meaningful change.

That is the power of compassion-driven education.
