Clarity of Direction: Lessons from Kim and Ross Hamilton

June 2, 2025  •  Author: marketing

Clarity of direction is essential for anyone seeking personal and professional growth, as emphasized by Kymberly and Ross Hamilton during their time with our students at Cumorah Academy. This clarity happens when your actions align with your vision, allowing you to live with greater purpose, confidence, and fulfillment.

At Cumorah Academy, we teach that finding a personal compass is essential during the decision-making process. What are your values? Do you have someone whom you admire or mirror? These are critical questions to ask as you shape your life’s path.

Why Clarity of Direction Matters

We often discuss clarity of direction in our classrooms because an alarming number of young adults today struggle with a lack of purpose. According to 2023 research, 60% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 reported that they feel they lack “meaning or purpose.” This absence of direction can lead to a host of other challenges, including anxiety, indecision, and disengagement from both personal and professional pursuits.

Cumorah Academy exists to change this scenario—one person at a time. We believe that with the right guidance and supportive community, every young adult can find clarity of direction and build a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.

Three Steps to Gain Clarity of Direction

Based on the lessons shared by the Hamiltons and the experiences of our students, there are three essential steps that can help anyone find clarity of direction in life.

1. Evaluate Your Life: What Really Matters?

The first step is simple yet profound: evaluate your life. What changes would you like to make? This self-assessment doesn’t need to focus solely on professional or academic ambitions. Perhaps you want to start a family, travel more, or spend more quality time with friends.

The act of asking yourself these questions forces you to pause and reflect on your true desires and values, rather than getting swept up in external expectations or societal pressures. This reflection is foundational in creating alignment between your actions and your long-term vision—what we call clarity of direction.

2. Set a 30-Day Goal: Turn Dreams into Action

The second step is to set a goal that you can work on for 30 days. This concept was popularized by Matt Cutts in his TED Talk, where he described how setting 30-day challenges allowed him to write a novel, quit sugar, and start new healthy habits.

You can watch his inspiring talk here:

By turning your biggest dreams into small, manageable goals, you create momentum and develop resilience. You don’t necessarily have to achieve your ultimate dream in 30 days, but you can make meaningful progress. This approach is a proven method for overcoming procrastination and transforming vague aspirations into concrete action steps.

When you break your goals down like this, you’ll naturally begin to sharpen your clarity of direction, making it easier to know where to focus your energy.

3. Find Joy in Every Pursuit

The third and perhaps most important step is to find joy in every pursuit. Kymberly and Ross Hamilton taught this invaluable lesson to our students during their time with us at Cumorah Academy. After all, what’s the point of achieving a goal if you don’t find joy in the journey?

The Hamiltons encouraged students to:

  • Listen actively and lead with empathy
  • Be assertive and confident in their chosen direction
  • Go easy on themselves, embracing growth over perfection

They also shared their own real-life stories about how staying true to one’s values and being open to learning can lead to a fulfilling and purpose-driven career path.

Learning from the Hamiltons

Kymberly and Ross Hamilton’s life stories are powerful examples of living with clarity of direction.

Kymberly Hamilton, from Salt Lake City, Utah, grew up in Holladay alongside her brother. Both were adopted as babies by loving parents. She studied at Brigham Young University and participated in a study abroad in Jerusalem. She also served a mission in the England Bristol Mission. Kymberly has worked as a dental hygienist for over 20 years and now owns her own dental company. Eventually, she married Ross and became a mother to his three sons, and together they now enjoy the blessings of six grandsons.

Ross Hamilton, also from Salt Lake City, Utah, has two sisters and one brother (who has since passed away). He studied Marketing at the University of Utah and served a mission in Fukuoka, Japan. Ross’s career began in the airline industry, delivering tickets. He then moved into reservations and pricing, ultimately becoming Director of Pricing and a business consultant in the travel and e-commerce industries.

Before leaving our campus, the Hamiltons shared some final words of wisdom with our students:

  • “Be gentle with yourself.”
  • “Go easy on yourself.”
  • “Don’t be afraid to take time figuring out what you truly love.”

These counsels are simple yet profound reminders that finding clarity of direction is not about rushing to a predetermined destination. It’s about being patient, open, and compassionate with yourself as you navigate life’s opportunities and challenges.

The Hamiltons shared a little of their experience on campus:
