Leadership is a Continuous Journey of Learning: Paul & Terri Smith

March 30, 2026  •  Author: marketing

Continuous learning is a way of living.

Many people think leadership comes from titles, positions, or experience alone. But true leadership grows through curiosity, humility, and the willingness to keep learning throughout life. The story of Paul and Terri Smith shows that leadership is not a destination. It is a lifelong journey shaped by continuous learning.

Meet the Mentors: Paul & Terri Smith

Terri and Paul Smith were married in June 1985. Over the years, their lives have been filled with family, service, and growth.

“We had five children,” Terri shares. “So I became a homemaker and focused on supporting and helping our children. They’re all married now and have their own families. We have 12 grandchildren, with two more on the way, and so that’s exciting.”

Family became the foundation of their leadership. Through parenting, mentoring, and supporting others, they learned that growth often happens in everyday moments.

Later in life, their journey continued in unexpected ways.

“After he retired, together we served a mission in Zimbabwe,” Terri explains. “We just returned home two months ago. I’ve written two books, so I enjoy writing.”

Their story reflects an important truth: continuous learning does not stop when a career ends or when responsibilities change. In many ways, it begins again.

How They Found Cumorah Academy

The Smiths discovered Cumorah Academy through a simple conversation that later changed their path.

“We actually came to Europe three years ago,” Paul recalls. “We were visiting friends on a teaching assignment in Salzburg. They mentioned a place called Cumorah Academy and shared how strong their impression was after spending a few days here.”

That memory stayed with them.

Later, while serving their mission and deciding what to do next, Terri remembered that conversation. What began as a small recommendation became a meaningful opportunity to mentor young adults and continue their own learning journey.

Sometimes, the next step in our growth begins with a small impression we choose to follow.

A Life Shaped by Learning

Paul grew up on a farm in western Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Military life taught him discipline, resilience, and responsibility.

Terri’s path looked different but complemented his perfectly. She grew up in Utah, attended BYU, served a mission in Paris, and later worked for the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C.

“That’s where I met my husband,” she says with a smile. The rest, as they say, is history.

Their experiences show that leadership develops across many seasons of life. Education, service, family, and work all became classrooms for continuous learning.

Leadership is not formed in one defining moment. It is built through many learning experiences over time.

Why You Should Give Continuous Learning a Try

In today’s fast-changing world, learning cannot stop after graduation. Skills evolve. Industries change. Opportunities appear for those who stay curious.

According to Forbes, continuous learning helps professionals stay ahead by developing new skills, exploring ideas, and adapting to change. People can attend conferences, take courses, or read industry publications to remain informed and competitive.

But the benefits go beyond career success.

Research also shows that learning something new improves mental health and overall well-being. Studies highlight several advantages:

  • Greater adaptability and flexibility
  • Improved brain health and memory
  • Increased happiness and mental wellbeing

Continuous learning strengthens both your professional future and your personal life.

When people challenge their minds, they build confidence. They become more creative. They develop resilience when facing uncertainty.

Learning keeps life meaningful because growth gives us purpose.

The Consequences of Not Investing in Your Learning

Choosing not to learn may feel comfortable at first. Routine feels safe. Familiar habits require less effort.

However, over time, stagnation creates limitations.

Skills become outdated. Confidence decreases. Opportunities pass by unnoticed. Without growth, it becomes harder to adapt to new challenges or changing environments.

The world continues moving forward whether we grow or not. Continuous learning ensures we move forward with it.

Leadership requires adaptability, and adaptability comes from learning. Those who remain curious stay prepared for the future.

A Final Counsel for Students

As mentors, Paul and Terri offer simple but powerful advice to students preparing for their next chapter.

“Go forward with faith and confidence, applying the things that you’ve learned.”

They also encourage students to keep improving spiritually and personally:

“Continue learning and striving to become an even better disciple of Jesus Christ.”

Their message reminds us that education is not only academic. It is also emotional, spiritual, and relational.

Continuous learning shapes who we become, not just what we know.
