Why We Love Stories

We love stories.

After returning from a meaningful trip, people naturally want to share what happened. Stories help us remember moments that changed us. They also help others feel connected to our journey.

Stories create lasting memories. They allow us to relive emotions and lessons long after an experience ends.

At Cumorah Academy, every student outreach experience becomes a story worth telling. Students return home with memories that shape how they see service, people, and themselves.

The Esther Outreach Project is one of those stories.

It is simple. It is human. And it is powerful.

Serving in Downtown Vlašim

Esther’s group traveled to a donation and recreation center located in downtown Vlašim.

The building itself has a long history. It was once a shoe factory that closed after World War II. Years later, the space found new life as a center where people could receive donations and gather for activities.

The students arrived ready to serve.

They were divided into teams so every task could be completed efficiently. Some students worked in the kitchen. Their responsibility was to count plates, cups, and cutlery. The goal was simple but important: make sure all items were available and organized for future use.

Other students focused on restocking supplies. They checked products carefully and removed items that had expired. This helped the center stay safe and prepared to serve the community.

Through this student outreach experience, students learned that service often happens through small and practical actions.

Service is not always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like organizing shelves or counting dishes. Yet those small actions make a real difference.

Finding Joy in Helping Others

Eliza, a student from Brazil, shared how the project impacted her personally:

“I had a wonderful experience in the project, and I felt happy in helping others. I could see the happiness in others as we helped them.”

Her words show an important truth. Service creates joy for both the giver and the receiver.

During this student outreach experience, students discovered that happiness often comes from focusing on others instead of themselves.

They saw smiles. They felt gratitude. And they realized that kindness crosses all cultural boundaries.

Learning That Service Has No Borders

Edrei, a student from Mexico, also reflected on what the project meant to him:

“We had the opportunity to help them with our service and show the Cumorah Academy values. Something that helped me to understand is that it doesn’t matter where you are. You always have the opportunity to serve. To love people, even if you don’t know them.”

This insight became one of the strongest lessons of the day.

Service does not depend on language, country, or background. Anyone can serve anywhere.

Through this student outreach experience, students learned that compassion is universal. Even without speaking Czech, they could communicate care through actions.

Edrei concluded with a powerful reminder:

“That’s why we are here — not only to be served, but to serve.”

Connection Beyond Language

Another student from Mexico, Antonio, shared what it was like to perform and interact with people at the recreation center:

“We’re really grateful for this experience. We were able to show God’s love to these people — even though we don’t speak Czech. They were grateful for our help. We felt connected and happy to serve.”

Moments like this show how service builds connection faster than words.

A smile, a helping hand, or shared laughter can unite people from completely different cultures.

This student outreach experience helped students understand that true communication comes from empathy and kindness.

They did not need perfect language skills to make an impact. Their willingness to serve was enough.

Growth Through Service

The outreach project was not only about helping others. It was also about personal growth.

Antonio later reflected on how these experiences shape students at Cumorah Academy:

“These experiences at Cumorah Academy help us to draw closer to the Savior and to the people around us.”

Service changes perspective.

Students begin to see challenges differently. They become more grateful. They learn leadership through action instead of theory.

Each student outreach experience becomes part of a larger journey of growth. Students develop confidence, empathy, and purpose.

They leave not only with memories but with new values guiding their future decisions.

Stories That Continue After the Project

When students return home, the service may end, but the stories continue.

They share what they learned with friends and family and remember the people they met. They carry lessons that influence how they live and serve in their own communities.

A meaningful student outreach experience does not stay in one place. It travels through the stories students tell and the lives they continue to touch.

These stories inspire others to serve as well.

And that is how one simple day of service creates lasting impact.
