One of the most valuable lessons at Cumorah Academy happens outside the classroom.

This semester, students had the opportunity to teach English classes in the beautiful countryside town of Vlašim, Czech Republic.

For many, it became one of the highlights of the semester.

Bringing English to Local Classrooms

Students from the Moroni, Ruth, and Isaiah houses visited local schools to teach English to children and teenagers.

Working in small groups, they led activities, practiced conversations, and encouraged students to use English in a fun and welcoming environment.

The experience challenged them to communicate clearly, think creatively, and connect with people from a different culture.

It also reminded them that learning a language is about building relationships.

Teaching Together

Rather than teaching alone, Cumorah Academy students worked as teams inside each classroom.

Glenda de Souza, from Brazil, shared what the experience looked like.

“All of us went to a class. There were five or six people in the same class teaching English to teenagers.”

Working together gave each volunteer the opportunity to contribute while supporting one another. The teamwork also created energetic lessons that encouraged every student to participate.

Connecting Across Cultures

For many of the Czech students, meeting people from different countries was just as exciting as practicing English. Emily de Souza, from Brazil, noticed how meaningful those interactions became.

“While we were teaching, I saw a positive impact because some of them had never had contact with non-Europeans before.”

Simple conversations became opportunities to broaden perspectives. Students learned about different cultures, traditions, and experiences while discovering how much they had in common.

Finding Similarities Around the World

Although they came from different countries, the students quickly realized they shared many of the same interests.

Maelyn George, from the United States, reflected on that experience.

“I had so much fun. It was really fun to see how teenagers in Vlašim reminded me of the teenagers in my home.”

It was a reminder that friendships can begin anywhere. Language may be different, but hopes, dreams, and laughter are universal.

Helping Others Believe in Their Potential

Teaching English was about much more than practicing grammar. It was about encouraging young people to believe in themselves.

Jennel Garcia, from Mexico, expressed that hope perfectly.

“I hope these teenagers feel that their dreams are possible.”
