Leadership grows when people use their skills to make a difference in the lives of others. At Cumorah Academy, student outreach projects give young adults opportunities to put their knowledge into practice, serve their communities, and develop the skills they need to become future leaders.
During Session 3 of 2026, Cumorah Academy students traveled to Vlašim, a Czech city, to teach English to children and teenagers. Through interactive lessons, games, and cultural activities, they created opportunities for students to learn while experiencing different cultures.
The project also helped Cumorah students develop important leadership skills, including public speaking, communication, cultural awareness, and time management.

Why Are Student Outreach Projects Important?
At Cumorah Academy, leadership development goes beyond classroom lessons. Students learn important principles, but they also need opportunities to apply those principles in real situations.
Student outreach projects help students turn what they learn into meaningful action. They encourage young adults to recognize their talents, share their knowledge, and spend their time supporting others.
Serving a community also helps students understand that leadership involves more than personal achievements. Great leaders consider others’ needs and look for ways to help people grow.
These experiences can challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, communicate with unfamiliar audiences, and adapt to different situations. Each challenge becomes an opportunity to learn and improve.
Through this approach, Cumorah Academy encourages students to become leaders who understand the value of service and take responsibility for making a positive difference.
Teaching English to Children and Teenagers in Vlašim
For Session 3 of 2026, Cumorah Academy students visited Vlašim to share their English skills and introduce children and teenagers to their home countries and cultures.
The students designed activities that encouraged participation and made learning enjoyable. Rather than simply presenting information, they created opportunities for the children and teenagers to interact, ask questions, and learn through practical experiences.
Fernando Silva, a student from Brazil, was pleased with the teenagers’ involvement.
“The teenagers were so participative. They collaborated a lot in class,” he shared.
Their enthusiasm helped create an engaging learning environment. The students also used games and cultural activities to make the lessons more interactive.
Fernando explained some of the activities they prepared: “We taught about our countries, played Kahoot, and it was very fun.”
By sharing stories about their home countries, the Cumorah students introduced new perspectives and encouraged cultural exchange. The activities also gave the children and teenagers opportunities to practice English in an enjoyable setting.
These student outreach projects demonstrate how a simple idea, such as teaching a language, can bring people together and create meaningful experiences for everyone involved.

Learning Through Culture, Games, and Dancing
Language learning can become more engaging when students connect it with other interests. In Vlašim, the Cumorah students combined English lessons with games, cultural discussions, and dancing.
These activities allowed the participants to interact in different ways. They could learn new information, collaborate with others, and enjoy spending time together.
Veronica Espinet, a student from Venezuela, described the experience with enthusiasm.
“It was a very lovely experience,” she said. “The kids are lovely and willing to learn about our countries.”
Her words reflect an important part of community service: the opportunity to build connections with people from different backgrounds.
For the Cumorah students, meeting children and teenagers in Vlašim offered more than a chance to practice teaching. It also allowed them to share their cultures, discover common interests, and appreciate the enthusiasm of the people they met.
Student outreach projects create opportunities for mutual learning. While volunteers share their knowledge and experience, they also learn from the people they serve.
Four Leadership Skills Students Practiced
The visit to Vlašim allowed students to apply several skills simultaneously. Each activity required them to communicate, prepare, collaborate, and respond to their audience’s needs.
1. Public Speaking
Teaching a group requires students to explain ideas clearly and keep their audience engaged. By leading lessons and activities, the Cumorah students practiced presenting information and connecting with others.
2. English Communication
The project gave students opportunities to use English in real-world settings. They needed to communicate instructions, explain activities, and interact with children and teenagers.
3. Cultural Awareness
Sharing their countries and experiences helped students appreciate cultural differences. They also practiced communicating with people whose backgrounds and experiences differed from their own.
4. Planning and Time Management
Preparing lessons and organizing activities required students to plan their time and coordinate their efforts. These skills are valuable in professional environments, community initiatives, and future leadership roles.
Through student outreach projects, these skills become more than concepts discussed in class. Students have opportunities to practice them, recognize areas for improvement, and gain experience working with others.

Building a Leadership Mindset Through Service
Leadership influences the environments people create around them. Leaders who consider others’ needs can help build communities where people feel supported, included, and encouraged to grow.
At Cumorah Academy, service provides a practical way for students to develop this mindset. Instead of focusing solely on their personal goals, they learn to consider how their abilities can benefit others.
The experience in Vlašim reflects this principle. By teaching English and sharing cultural experiences, the students used their time and talents to contribute to their community.
These student outreach projects also remind students that meaningful contributions do not always require complicated plans. Sometimes, sharing a skill, offering encouragement, or creating an enjoyable learning experience can make a difference.

The experience in Vlašim is one example of how students can put their learning into action while building connections across cultures.
